Acc conference expansion news12/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() (ESPN’s hegemony over college football is a significant issue, as we explained last month.)īut by delaying expansion until the next contract cycle, the CFP could take all 11 games (over four rounds) to the open market and accept multiple bids, thereby driving up the price. If the 12-team format is implemented prior to the 2026 season, then ESPN would have the option to become the sole rights-holder in a non-competitive bidding process. ![]() And no issue carries more immediacy for the tripartite alliance than a possible vote to delay expansion of the College Football Playoff until the next contract cycle. However, multiple industry sources have described the scheduling piece as secondary to matters of policy and governance. According to a report in The Athletic, the alliance could be formally announced in the next week. The three conferences are discussing a potential alliance in the wake of the SEC voting to add Texas and Oklahoma. That model could change once the Pac-12’s new media rights contract begins in the fall or 2024, and there’s an obvious option that could intrigue potential media partners:Ī scheduling partnership with the Big Ten and ACC that creates a series of high-profile matchups each season. “Unless you come up with a solution that’s more attractive for TV for that ninth game,” Kliavkoff said, “you’re playing nine conference games.” ESPN and Fox assuredly would balk at a scenario in which those six openings were filled by non-conference matchups against creampuffs. The Pac-12 plays 54 conference games remove one per team and the total drops to 48. “But some of them, like whether we go to eight conference games instead of nine, may take a little longer because of obligations in our current media rights deal for how many conference games we play.” “Once we have recommendations, then some of them, I’m sure, we could do immediately - when we put bye weeks in for next year, as an example. “The timeline is to have a first set of working recommendations by the end of the football season. “Merton’s charge is to look at everything we decide at the conference level to optimize for College Football Playoff invitations,” Kliavkoff said. How to tweak the conference schedule to give teams the best chance for success. If the division format should be continued or eliminated. Whether to drop to eight conference games. Merton Hanks, the Pac-12’s chief of football operations, is working with all the athletic directors and head coaches to plot a strategy on several key issues: While Kliavkoff and his expansion advisors focus on the size of the conference, another group is diving deep into the structure of the football product. If we add schools from different geographic regions, does that fit well?” We have a major brand presence on the West Coast. It’s more about similar styles institutionally. “The second thing I hear a lot about is institutional fit. You could pick schools that make us a 16- or 18-team conference, but the next question is, ‘OK, how does that close the revenue gap? … “That still drives a lot of the decision-making. “All the conversations I’ve had are really focused on closing the revenue gap,’’ Schulz told the Hotline recently. Without Texas and Oklahoma propping them up, none of the Big 12 universities are believed to carry enough media rights value to be worthwhile to the Pac-12. That figure is expected to soar when the next media rights deals are negotiated in 18-24 months.Īny new member would have to bring enough media value to increase the windfall for the existing schools and help the conference narrow the revenue gap with the Big Ten and SEC. “No schools really add value,” said a source not affiliated with the Pac-12.Įach Pac-12 athletic department will receive approximately $24 million this year from the regular-season broadcast agreements with ESPN and Fox, according to the term sheet of the Tier 1 contract obtained by the Hotline. However, multiple industry sources contacted by the Hotline in recent weeks believe the most likely outcome for the conference is to remain at 12. But the list likely includes many, if not all of the universities in the Big 12, which is reeling after the departure of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC. Kliavkoff has not specified which schools are interested in joining the Pac-12. The decision to pursue expansion doesn’t require approval by the presidents and chancellors, but a three-quarters vote of the CEO Group would be necessary for formal invitations to be extended to any new members. ![]()

In Japan you might find your instant noodles served with lots of spring onions and fried tofu that’s been marinated in a little fish sauce and sesame oil, while in India they are popular mixed with fried curry spices and paneer (or halloumi) and fresh coriander. There’s a lot more potential in a packet of instant noodles than just adding the flavour sachet. Instant noodles certainly won’t win any prizes in the nutrition stakes, as they’re made from refined wheat flour and fried in palm oil, but what they lack in nutrition they more than make up for in both convenience and “hackability”. He added the flavour-enhancing combo of MSG, salt and sugar (which now comes in a flavour sachet) to boost the taste. This pre-cooked the noodles while keeping them crisp and shelf-stable. But ultimately he succeeded through a method of first cooking the noodles in chicken broth and then frying them in hot oil. It took Ando more than a year to perfect the process of making a dry block of noodles. Japanese people were accustomed to eating noodles rather than slices of bread, so with the surplus wheat donated by the United States, he decided to invent an industrial version of freshly made ramen. In 1957, businessman Momofuku Ando wanted to help relieve Japan’s food crisis with a food product that held some cultural resonance. The birth of instant noodles can be traced back to post-war Japan where, more than a decade after the war was over, the country was still experiencing food shortages. My wager comes down to a numbers game, as, according to the World Instant Noodles Association (yes, there is such an entity), around 290 million servings of instant noodles are eaten every day, making for a staggering 105.8 billion servings a year. So the Medicare Trustees provided a slightly lower number than Cavuto used, and his other source provided a significantly lower number. "Showing the gross spending amount would, in a way, overstate federal spending on Medicare because some of that amount comes back to the Treasury in the form of premiums," Cubanski said. Juliette Cubanski, a top Medicare analyst at Kaiser, explained that the net amount does a better job of capturing the burden on taxpayers as a whole. That page reports the net figure, which factors in billions of dollars of premiums paid by Medicare users, along with recaptured inappropriate payments to providers.įor 2013, Kaiser reported net spending of $492 billion. We also found that the other source cited by Fox Business, the Kaiser Family Foundation, which is widely seen as a neutral source of health care data, focuses on the net outlays, not the gross spending.įox Business directed us to the foundation’s Medicare fact-sheet. (The difference is due to accounting rules.) Since that comes from the Trustees' official report to Congress, we gave it some weight. While the CMS fact sheet does report $585.7 billion in gross spending, the Medicare Trustees, the program’s overseers, reported a slightly lower $582.9 billion for 2013. We found a discrepancy in the gross outlay number. Gross outlays are basically money out the door, and net outlays reduces the total based on the money Medicare takes in apart from the federal budget and the payroll tax. ![]() Medicare spending is reported in two ways: Gross outlays and net outlays. We tried to repeat Cavuto’s analysis and ran into some issues.Ĭavuto’s Medicare spending number is not bulletproof. Using Cavuto’s estimate, three years of Medicare spending is more than all the money the top 1 percent took in. The correct number is actually $1.757 trillion, but the point remains the same. They multiplied the Medicare number by three and found that it would be $1.755 trillion over three years. ![]() That page gave them the figure of $585.7 billion of Medicare expenditures. They came up with "about $1.75 trillion."įor the cost of Medicare, they went to two sources: The Kaiser Family Foundation, which we’ll get to in a moment, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services web page on national health expenditures for 2013. Instead, a spokeswoman explained that Cavuto and his producer averaged the yearly income going to the top 1 percent as reported by the Internal Revenue Service for 2011, 20. The Fox press office didn’t point us to any studies. We asked the Fox Business Network for studies backing up Cavuto’s math. We don’t want to get boring either, but reader be warned: Numbers, multiplication and subtraction lie ahead. Could the wealthiest 1 percent pay for Medicare for three years or not? Several readers asked us to check Cavuto’s basic math. Do you know it wouldn’t keep Medicare - just Medicare - going for three years? " But even if you were to take the 1 percent, and take all of their money, tax it 100 percent. "They’ve done studies on this, Keely," Cavuto said.
